Being an administrative assistant (formerly called a secretary) or a receptionist may not be the most glamorous or well-paid job in an office, but it is an important one. These positions are the workers that make your life easier by lending hands, eyes and ears to help you get your work done on time and without mistakes.
Like any job in an office, administrative assistants, or admins as they are sometimes called, have a gripe or two about how they are treated, or mistreated. Life as an admin is not the most high profile or the most financially rewarding position. And administrative assistants work long hours under tight deadlines and scrutiny. So what are some common administrative assistant complaints? In no particular order, admins provided the following insight into their working lives. Many say they are only one person and should not be expected to do the work of two people. Obviously, their bosses have never been an admin. Otherwise, they would realize there is a limit to an individual's work output. Another common complaint is that an admin usually provides assistance to several people. They do not like to have one individual monopolize their time with mundane tasks such as finding a restaurant for lunch or getting concert tickets. It is difficult to get important things completed when the admin has to find tickets to Bon Jovi for Saturday night. Many admins say they do not need all the extraneous details. Just tell them what you want and when you want it completed. They can do without your superfluous information about a project, even if you think it is relevant. Most admin positions are staffed by women. Don't for one minute think that just because HR had a big meeting on how to avoid it, that sexual harassment doesn't exist. The sexist remarks you think are cute, are actually offensive and make working for you unbearable. Admins are not teachers. Just because you slept through the meeting about new software doesn't mean your admin has the time or inclination to teach you.
