Elements of a Business Card

Whether you have previously had business cards printed for yourself or employees, it probably wouldn't hurt to review these key elements before getting the next batch printed. Paying for the printing of hundreds of business cards missing one valuable bit of information can be an expensive lesson for the small business owner.

Name of the Individual
Always include the name of the individual. I know this sounds obvious, but I once received my new business cards and they had everything...but my name! Sometimes, businesses will print generic cards to serve as temporary cards for new employees until the official cards are printed-this is the only exception to the rule.

Job Title
Whether you run a small or home business, or are a cog in a major corporation, always include your title on a business card. If you don't have an official one, make it up. Titles still impress the clients.

Business or Organization Name
This should occupy a prominent place on the card, but not detract the individual's name. Corporate logos are fine as long as they do not overpower the card.

Email/Web Address
Probably more important these days than a physical address, the email address is critical to client and interoffice communication. A web address is sometimes a client's first impression of your and your company-be sure to include it.

Full Address
A physical and/or mailing address are integral element of any business card. Even if the company does business solely by phone or online, some sort of address (maybe just a city/state designation) on the card just makes good sense.

Phone Numbers
List phone numbers in order of preference. Voice, cell and fax are the typical order for business cards. Omit any numbers if they are not the preferred form of contact. Remember to include area codes or country codes and an extension, if necessary.
