Cloud computing, a relatively new technology term, involves internet-based computing. Resources, software and information are provided on demand therefore minimizing the need for expertise managing an on-site infrastructure. The technology of computing has evolved from mainframe to client-server and now to the clouds.

This new delivery method for IT services takes advantage of the easy access to remote computing sites via the Internet. Users access these services through a web browser, the same as if the software and services were installed on their computer. Common business applications are accessed online while the software and data are stored on cloud servers.

Apple's tablet computer, the iPad, is designed to utilize cloud servers. An iPad sells for around $500 to slightly over $800 depending on memory size and whether it has Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and 3-G capability. The iPad is a very popular product from Apple. However, competition is on the horizon and at a much cheaper price.

Recently unveiled in India is a prototype tablet computer that could be a major player in the cloud computing market. At a proposed price of $35 (that is not a misprint!) this tablet computer could become a behemoth in the consumer market as well. Indian universities in partnership with the Indian government developed the prototype.

The prototype tablet runs a variation of the Linux operating system and includes 2GB of RAM, USB and integrated Wi-Fi. Rather than built-in storage, the unit uses a removable memory card. A web browser, multimedia player, word processor and PDF reader are included.

The Indian tablet, compared to the iPad, is a base model device. For business and consumers obsessed with technology, this tablet falls somewhat short. Nevertheless, as cloud computing grows, the need by individual users for processing power and mass storage becomes less important.

Now we wait to determine if the prototype will ever go into production and introduced outside of India. The concept, however, could push similar innovation in other parts of the developed world. Obviously there is worldwide demand for a low-cost tablet.
