Is it Possible to Fight Corporate Red Tape?

Thank author of this post/comment

You would think red tape, or those series of bureaucratic--sometimes nonsense--processes that you have to go through before doing what you want to do, is only exclusive to governments. It turns out it is appallingly present in all organizations, most especially corporations. Risk management practices and conventions have led to the creation of these intermediary processes, some of which just don't make any sense at all and just adds to the hindrances you have to hurdle through.

Approvals, compliance, request processing--all of these requirements (plus some more) all add up to the amount of time that you have to sit just to get what you want. While some are understandable, others are obviously not and it may astound why on earth do you have to secure director approval for a simple request to have a document printed.

If you are just a low-level manager or if you are really at the bottom of the corporate ladder, there's sadly nothing that you can do about it. Middle- and upper-management rarely heeds the advice of those in lower ranks if this will involve reduction of red tape. Maybe there are a few exceptions, but I think it's fair enough to say that this is the case. Financial firms, which are very conservative, are particularly notorious for this.

Now if you are in middle-management, there's a pretty good chance that your suggestions are heeded, but if you have worked your way up here, you've been probably sucked in by the system already that you do not know what is wrong with your corporate processes anymore. In the end, there's no chance. In fact, it's just possible that more red tape comes in as the corporation gets larger and larger.

I can only think of one way to overcome these red tapes, and that is if the company is in risk of losing big money if a decision is not made quickly. Then again, I would imagine that after the fiasco, you will be put under the spotlight as to why you did not put the situation under the tape immediately.
