OfficeSummer Dress Code for the Office
Summer is upon us and it is going to be hot - great weather for barbques, golf or going to the beach. Not, however, the best weather for working. Even with casual attire allowed in many offices these days, it is difficult to coordinate your wardrobe with summer heat and humidity.
The difficulty doesn't stop with coordination. The casual business attire revolution may have reached its tipping point as many businesses are saying enough is enough. In fact, many offices believe the line between your weekend wardrobe and business casual attire has been crossed and it is time to pull back just a bit. Led by high tech companies, business attire has been reduced to a very relaxed look that many conservative companies want to stop. At one time, many companies found themselves having to compete with the tech shops to lure and keep employees. That is when they let down their hair and created casual Fridays as well as casual summer dress. Sloppy or skimpy summer clothing has become more noticeable the last few years. It can be a distraction to co-workers and have an impact on productivity. It can also cause problems with customer service when customers don't like what they see. Generally speaking, appropriate summer dress does not include jeans, shorts, tank-tops, halter tops, spandex and flip-flop shoes. In addition, sheer fabric, exposed bra straps and bare midriffs have no place in the workplace. The bar has been set. If you are wearing something to work that you would wear at the beach or for a Friday night out, it probably is not appropriate attire. Still, a lot has to do with your particular job. T-shirts and jeans are appropriate for the warehouse and loading dock, but not for administrative assistants or sales people and other office staff. Consultants agree that what a person wears has a lot to do with their age. Older workers are more conservative and typically don't push dress code limits. Younger workers, on the other hand, are more likely to bend the rules. It is clearly a generational thing.
