How many times have you been sitting in your office, when a personal emergency comes up and you can't help? Most of the time they require nothing more than ordinary items you might find around your house. At the office, these things are not readily available. If this example fits you, consider stocking the following items in your desk.

The boss is about to go into an important meeting and can't stop coughing. Cough drops would be great but he doesn't have any. Or your cube mate develops a severe headache. Ibuprofin or acetaminophen sure would be nice to offer. Maybe that street vendor's chili cheese dog you had for lunch is not setting well. Wouldn't it be great to have an antacid?

Consider creating your own emergency kit containing those items you never have when you need them the most. Put your supplies in a shoebox. The size is perfect and the box will easily fit in your desk or file cabinet.

In addition to cough drops, painkillers and antacids, here are several additional indispensable items you may want to include in your kit. If you wear contact lenses, dry eyes can drive you crazy. Saline solution and rewetting drops are invaluable for computer work and to dislodge foreign objects from the eye.

A missing button or broken zipper can ruin anyone's day. A simple safety pin can alleviate embarrassment quickly and efficiently. You open your desk drawer, reach for a file and get a paper cut. Your emergency kit has a band-aid and a tube of antibiotic cream. Problem solved.

The garlic sandwich you had for lunch offending coworkers. Keep a pack of gum or some powerful breath mints on hand to end halitosis in seconds. If anyone needs change for a soda, have a few dollars in coins in your kit.

Hungry and can't go to lunch? Powdered microwave soups are a great hunger buster.

Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared.
