What do stress and weight gain have in common? The answer is easy - the office. In addition to tight deadlines, mean clients and even meaner bosses, the candy and vending machines in the break room contribute to many of us being overweight or having high blood pressure. Businesses might want to consider helping their employees adopt healthier eating habits.

Some businesses are on the healthy working bandwagon. Dow Chemical, for instance, has instituted changes that encourage their employees to learn how to take better care of themselves. The central theme of Dow's effort revolves around helping employees eat healthier and to get more physical activity. In turn, they take less time off for illness.

Dow Chemical, like other companies around the country, has built walking trails, installed gyms and exercise rooms and changed the selection in the dreaded office vending machines. No longer can you get a bag of Doritos, a chocolate muffin and a coke for lunch. Instead, vending machines now carry fruit, healthy snacks and energy drinks.

Dow's fitness program, called LightenUP, is being conducted in partnership with Emory University's Institute for Health and Productivity Studies. Other companies are instituting similar programs designed to help their employees make healthy choices. Dow's participation in the program has already had noticeable results.

Even if your company does not have this type of program and your lunch room vending machine is full of junk food, you can create your own health and fitness routine for the office. Start with bringing your lunch to work. Include reasonable portions and some healthy snacks such as an apple or carrots.

Rather than sit in the break room eating cookies, take a walk instead. A few minutes of walking each day will bring noticeable physical results, reduces stress and boosts your energy level. Find a coworker that is interested in being healthy to join you. A little companionship can make the walk even more enjoyable.

Getting into a healthy lifestyle is a lose-win proposition. The more weight and stress you lose, the more you win.
