Have you ever experience being with someone and yet you are not? I mean, they are there with you, physically, but their minds are floating up in the air because they are texting? I bet you have.
One thing I learned in the past is that when you are with people, do everything possible to be with them.
I am always annoyed with people I'm talking to when while I'm talking to them, they are dancing their fingers on their phone's keypad. And then they will periodiaclly ask "What?", "Can you say that again?", "Pardon?". The distraction from a conversation texting can bring is just beyond annoying.
Flaunting your cellphones in plain view, and texting while someone is talking in the front is extremely rude. The same applies for those who try to hide their texting activities under the table. We get your point, there's an interesting text you need to reply to, and you have to show off your new iPhone or Blackberry. But at least don't let them get a hint of your mal-education.
So when possible, try to focus your full attention to the person whom you are with. If you are doing something while with them, you are sending the wrong message that your other business on the phone is much more important than they are.
Of course, if you are expecting a call, be sure to let the people know of it. So when the time the important call comes, you have a good reason to pick it up even if you're in the middle of a meeting.
The best way to deal with text messages when with people is to take a short look at it and analyze the urgency of the message. If it's an emergency, then by all means let the people know you have to reply to it. If it's about your favorite basketball team winning the game or your favorite cooking show doing some rare recipe, just ignore them for the moment as you will have your time replying to them sometime later.
