Continuing its dominance of the productivity software market, Microsoft Office is now used by over 500 million people worldwide. In the past full versions of Microsoft Office came pre-installed on new PC's and was included in the price of the PC. Now consumers have even greater choice in how they can try and buy Office 2010 on new and existing computers.
Microsoft has taken steps to eliminate the disks and CD's containing versions of Microsoft Office that, in the past, shipped with new computers. This allows consumers more flexibility to try Office 2010 products and only purchase what they need. New computers now come pre-loaded with Office 2010 along with a Product Key Card. With the Product Key Card, also available for sale at electronics retailers, consumers will be able to unlock any or all of the software that has been preloaded on new PC's. This enables consumers a simple path to begin using any of the three versions of Office. In addition, Microsoft is introducing Office Starter, a reduced functionality version of Office 2010. Office Starter replaces the rather tired Microsoft Works. With Starter 2010, you get Word Starter and Excel Starter. Each has the ability to create, view and edit documents and spreadsheets. Also included is Ribbon that offers an easy way to upgrade to a full- featured version of Office. For people with existing PC's that want to try out Office 2010, Microsoft offers "Click-to-Run". Click-to-Run is an enhanced download application that reduces time and effort needed to download Office 2010 via the Internet. When connected to the Internet Click-to-Run automatically downloads and installs software patches. Click-to-Run enables PC users to try Office 2010 along side existing versions of MS Office. Using virtualization technology Click-to-Run allows users the ability to maintain multiple versions of Office. Users are encouraged to become familiar with Office 2010 and learn what works best for them. They can easily upgrade to full versions of Office Home and Student, Office Home and Business or Office Professional when they are ready to buy.
