No doubt, you have seen advertising for portable computers. One ad will use the term, laptop computer. Another may call their product a notebook computer. Frankly, when you take a portable computing device from the top of your desk to your lap, it becomes a laptop or notebook. The terms are basically interchangeable.
Call your portable computer whichever term you prefer, but note there are some differences between the two. If you are considering purchasing a portable computer you need to understand and be armed with these important differences. First, lets discuss notebook computers. Typically, a notebook is very lightweight, great for those always on the go. They have a better battery life at 4-5 hours which comes in handy during a long airport layover. Notebook computers have a very thin profile, making them easier to fit into a computer bag. They usually have good Wi-Fi capabilities too. The downside to smaller notebook computers is they often do not have an internal CD/DVD drive. If your fingers are larger than the typical eight-year old, you may find the small keyboard a bit difficult to use. In addition, the average screen size is 12", which can be a problem when working on a detailed spreadsheet, unless your eyesight is better than 20/20. Notebooks are designed for mobile computing, offering a lot of power for work and leisure activities. However, the mobility and power may come with a hefty price tag. Laptop computers are larger and designed to sit on your lap while still offering a full range of computing power. A laptop screen averages around 15", it has an integrated DVD/DVD-RW drive, the keyboard is full-featured and it is upgradeable. Most come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. Laptops have very good graphics subsystems and good audio and video. Prices are across the board. The size and functionality of laptops make them a higher priced option to the ultra-portable notebook. Bottom line: notebooks are limited but extremely portable. Laptops are designed to replace an entire desktop PC while offering portability. The choice depends on your computing needs.
