For a number of years, mobile phones have included cameras in an ever-increasing list of features. Consumers have been able to take a picture and immediately send it to one or many of their contacts. In the early days, the resolution and quality of the pictures was noticeably lacking, but device manufacturers have rapidly developed new and better cameras for their products.

Until recently, smartphones did not include a camera. The devices had a wide range of technological innovations but a camera was not one of them. As sophisticated as smartphones were, manufacturers did not believe a camera would be useful for their market, primarily business users.

The advent of the iPhone brought smartphones to the consumer. Now, thanks to Apple's innovative approach to marketing, almost all smartphones have cameras. Not only has resolution dramatically improved, many smartphones have two cameras, one for regular pictures and another for video conferencing.

In addition to video conferencing, business users of smartphones can use their mobile device as a tiny copy machine to capture information on printed or handwritten pages. One smartphone, by Omnia, includes a text mode setting making it easier to photograph documents and text.

Other phones have high technology software preinstalled. For example, one brand has a business card reader called Smart Reader. When you photograph someone's business card, the software extracts the information and places it in your contacts phonebook. No longer will you have to collect a stack of business cards from a trade show.

Smartphone cameras will never replace the digital SLR for photographic quality, but they definitely have replaced some of the low-end digital cameras and even some camcorders. With resolutions approaching 8 megapixels image quality is no longer an issue.

If you are considering a smartphone or planning to upgrade, your next smartphone will very likely include at least one camera. Take advantage of the smart technology and you will also benefit greatly from this very smart business tool.
