Going through your desk or the supply room, you spot everyday office items such as, sticky notes, reams and tablets of paper, staples and pencils. Beyond using a particular item for what it is intended, the majority of us don't give too much thought to mundane office supplies.

There are, however, people with a serious creative bent that have employed items from the supply cabinet to create elaborate works of art. San Francisco's Celebrity Junk Drawer used over 185,000 colored pencils to make a piece of art that covers almost 1,000 square feet. This mammoth artistic piece took the artist over five years to complete.

Another artist, Mangin, used 2,650 Post-it notes to make an Elvis mosaic using only two official Post-it color palettes, Aquatic and Sunbrite. Mangin used one package of dark blue Post-it notes to do Elvis' eyes. The mosaic is 63 Post-it by 42 Post-it in size. Several years ago the artist appeared on David Letterman's show doing a mosaic of stage manager, Biff Henderson.

A sculptor based in Austin, Texas has a slightly different, or sharper, take on supply art. In 2007, he began creating metal spiders entirely from scissors. Did he go out and buy a bunch of scissors expressly for the art project? No, he got the scissors from airport security after they had been confiscated from departing passengers.

Once the artist has enough scissors, he breaks them apart and uses heat to mold them. He then welds the metal together. Examples of his art can be found at his website.

Can you imagine a more innovate chandelier than one made from paper clips? One artist uses approximately 4,000 clips during the six weeks it takes him to fabricate a single chandelier. He has created over 12 elaborate chandelier creations.

For over four months another artist used pushpins and thumbtacks to create a 30"X40" self-portrait. His work can be seen on his website (EricDaigh.com). If you have time try to count the pins and tacks he used. If you count 8,500 of them you are very close.
