OfficeHaving Fun in the Office
Going to work, in most cases, is anything but fun. Offices, due to custom and tradition, are usually not fun places. They are not designed to be fun - or at least most offices are not designed to be fun. The new generation of offices, particularly in the technology industry, have attempted to change the old concept of work.
Still, most offices are places where you are paid to do work and not paid to have fun. Work is serious. Fun is not. Is there a way to combine serious work with fun that would increase productivity, reduce absenteeism and make going to the office something we look forward to? Sure there is! How many times have you sat through a meeting designed to inspire only to look around and see people nodding off, doodling or simply not paying attention? Senior management, when presented with the idea of trying to make work fun, often roll their eyes in obvious disbelief. Motivating a building full of employees is a difficult task. The usual answer to employee motivation is to throw a bucket of money at the problem. Whether through higher pay or cash incentives, managers avoid direct contact with this issue by making money the motivator. Sales staffers are often tempted with bonuses or trips in order to increase production. The level of financial motivation for other office positions sometimes has limited appeal. How is an administrative assistant motivated? Will a few extra bucks in their paycheck really move the needle on their productivity scale? Probably not over the long term. Workplace fun means energizing employees and has been proven to raise the bar on productivity when it comes to stimulating a lethargic sales team or a bored office staff. Whether you organize outdoor activities such as softball, volleyball or bowling teams you will find an immediate increase in team spirit and renewed levels of cooperation. Give it a try in your office - you may find it works.
