If you are a small business owner, you know that first impressions define your image. When clients or customers come to your office, you want to present a welcoming, professional atmosphere. Office equipment such as new ergonomically designed furniture, state-of-the-art computers and filing systems show you know what you are doing.

However, as a new business owner, you probably cannot afford such luxuries. Spending money on fancy office equipment and furniture takes away from advertising and marketing and can come back to bite you when business is slow. A mahogany desk may look impressive, but, in many cases, not a wise use of money.

There are a number of sources you can check out for less expensive furniture and equipment. These days many businesses have ceased operations or filed bankruptcy and their equipment is being auctioned. Auctions are a great way to find high-quality, gently-used office equipment. Newspapers list business auctions.

The Internet, of course, is another tool to source office equipment, either new or used. There are websites such as Auction Guide that post auction dates as well as items for sale.

eBay is a good website for finding new equipment at discounted prices. Search for the specific items your office needs or you can browse through the vast array of categories where you can find furniture, computers, restaurant and even industrial equipment.

Office liquidators offer a wide selection of items and equipment from larger businesses. Liquidators often acquire their merchandise through auctions. Liquidators prices are not as low as auctions but you may have a better chance of finding complete sets and matching pieces that are difficult to find at auctions.

Consider second hand shops or consignment stores. While prices at these stores may be higher than liquidators or auctions, they generally have a good selection. Unfortunately, second hand stores may have one of a kind pieces, so matching becomes a problem.

Do your homework, spend wisely and your bottom line will thank you.
