It is amazing how quickly technology changes. The computer you purchased only a few years ago seems outdated within a few months. New and improved operating systems are launched almost every day, which means your technology needs change just as rapidly. If your computer is outdated or about to crash, how do you get rid of the old unit?
Before taking the machine to the dumpster, remember that there are many things stored inside the old box. If you have the tech savvy to take out the hard drive(s), make sure you do just that. Even if you think you have deleted every bit of information on the drive, there is a chance you didn't get it all removed. There could still be all kinds of personal, business and financial information on hard drives that a semi-knowledgeable tech-thief will find interesting. Passwords, account numbers, product keys and contact information are just a few bits and bytes that an enterprising thief can steal. Take the drive(s) out even if you think all data has been deleted. If unsure, take the drives to a reputable computer geek for thorough cleansing. Before you get this far, however, remember to back up all of your files or transfer everything onto your new computer. Once all files are safely backed up, you should use a hard-drive wiping program such as Eraser or EgisTech Shredder. For Macs use ShredItX. Eraser and ShredItX are both free on the Internet. EgisTec Shredder costs $9.95. As you back up your drive, you should uninstall programs such as Microsoft Office. Office programs are full of personal information, so it is best to uninstall the entire program. Delete your Internet browsing history as well. Once you feel the old computer is secure, you can dispose of it by recycling it. Go to EcoSquid and determine the best way to rid yourself of your old machine. Once all the data is properly taken care of, consider donating it to charities or churches. And, if your equipment is relatively current, some retailers offer trade-in programs.
