OfficeOffice Bureaucracy Short Cuts
It seems like during the last 20 years or so, corporations have become more bureaucratic and cumbersome than ever. Technology was supposed to speed up our procedures, alleviating the resource jams that slow our work to a crawl. Simply put, that has not happened. If anything, its gotten even worse.
Following government's lead, corporate offices can destroy initiative and literally suck the life out of employees. Bureaucracy in its purest form requires tons of paperwork and meaningless processes that can turn employees into robots. Rather than apply initiative and creativity, employees are so burdened by bureaucracy that even simple projects turn into a nightmare. Both employees and management feel they spend most of their time trying to secure resources to do their work rather than actually accomplishing anything. If you find yourself in this type of environment, examine the cause of these problems in your office. Find out why the bureaucratic processes were instituted in the first place. Efficiency experts suggest, after an evaluation of the root causes of bureaucracy, you consider the ramifications of bypassing the procedure. However, don't go into it thinking you'll never get away with skirting the rules. There are times bending or breaking the rules is a path to becoming a stronger employee. You will find it may cause less waves to go through the proper channels rather than trying to revamp the system. Explain to superiors the type of roadblocks you encounter, as well as the benefits of sidestepping around these barriers. Expand upon how this maneuver will expedite workflow. Your boss should, in essence, appreciate your initiative. Streamlining a particular process is a valuable skill and if you are successful, you should bring it to management's attention. Demonstrate how your idea will benefit the entire organization. Time your bureaucratic change with other restructuring within the company, such as a management shift, layoffs or even a move to new facilities. You will never totally escape bureaucracy. You can, however, become a star if your ideas benefit the company and the bottom line.
