People that have never worked from home have an image in their mind of what a typical home office looks like. Usually that image is a small, cramped room in a corner of the basement. Papers and files are strewn around, an old door on blocks serves as a desk, seating is a worn out chair or two from an old dining set and in general, total chaos.

However, a home office does not have to be this way. Whether you find a quiet spot in the basement or take over an unused bedroom, your home office can be set up to look and feel professional. All it takes is a bit of imagination, a few hours painting and decorating and you are ready for business.

You may not realize it but you probably already own all the furniture you will need. How about a small dining or kitchen table, round or square, for your desk. The height is right for most people and it has ample room for computers, phone and files. A long forgotten end table can hold office supplies. That old lamp you never use will be great lighting.

With a weekend project you can paint your office a soothing earth tone. If your budget is sufficient, you could replace the carpet or even add a floating wood floor. Window treatments are also inexpensive, whether blinds or curtains, and can be installed in a few hours.

Once you decide what room or space your office will occupy it is a good idea to lay out the room on paper first. If there is a window in the room set up your desk to make sure the computer screen is not facing it to reduce glare. A minimum size for your desk is 24 inches deep and 36 inches width.

Make sure you have adequate electrical outlets, phone and Internet wiring. If you are in doubt about the electrical supply call an electrician to help. Make sure you have adequate task lighting for reading and computer work.
